What a brilliant debut. This is essentially a western, but not like any you have read before. Starkly beautiful, it follows the lives of two Chinese-American siblings in the dying days of the Californian Gold Rush. After the death of their father, the pair must journey into the harsh landscape and find their place in an unforgiving land. With themes of racism, gender, identity and belonging, Zhang takes the myth of the American West and turns it into something truer in this beautifully tender story about family, connection and love.
