MEXICAN GOTHIC: Silvia Moreno-Garcia
MEXICAN GOTHIC
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
I devoured this delicious tale of hauntings and mind games in a few sittings. Atmospheric and truly creepy, it’s a vivid gothic tale reminiscent of Jane Eyre or perhaps more aptly, The Wide Sargasso Sea. Set in Mexico during the 1950s, it follows society girl Noemi Taboada as she travels to a grand country estate to see her cousin Catalina, who has been sending disturbing letters since marrying the heir to a fading mining empire. The horror of the story comes not only from the malignancy of the mansion and its encroaching decay but also the evil machinations of its characters.
