I adored this book! Stella Montgomery is a kindred spirit of the curious and gutsy heroines of The Secret Garden and The Little Princess. An orphan living with three bad-tempered aunts in the grand but dull Majestic Hotel, Stella spends her days wishing something would happen. Then, one stormy night in the conservatory, Stella witnesses something she shouldn't, setting off a mysterious chain of events. Gorgeous inky pictures throughout the book capture the magic hidden just beneath the gloomy Victorian surface.
