SPQR: A HISTORY OF ANCIENT ROME: Mary Beard

SPQR: A HISTORY OF ANCIENT ROME

by Mary Beard

Anyone who reads history will know that it often follows a pattern. It repeats, it progresses almost as if it is ordained.  What I loved about Mary Beard’s history of Rome, is that it’s more about the people of the Great Empire, and people are messy, complicated and rarely follow patterns. This book follows the merchants, slaves, women and soldiers, making it bubbly and unpredictable. S.P.Q.R is incredibly intelligent and Beard revels in the messiness that other historians may want to organise.
