NIKOLAI THE PERFECT

by Jim McIntyre

This is not a book for the faint of heart. Jim McIntyre packs a lot into every sentence, creating a kaleidoscopic effect in the book’s opening before bringing things into sharp focus in its second half.

Set first in Moscow during the post-communist chaos that took over the country and then in Melbourne, it has a very strong sense of time and place. Reading it was a wonderful immersive experience. I have rarely been so moved with a debut novel; it definitely packs an emotional punch. Vasili, Anna and Nikolai will stay with me for a long time.
