This is a supremely elegant yet playful book. Question 7 is about Flanagan’s father (an ex-POW), H.G. Wells and his affair with Rebecca West, Oppenheimer and the atom bomb. How Flanagan manages to weave all these elements together while provoking tender insight into his love for his father and Tasmania, and what humanity, and life itself, constitutes, is almost magical. Flanagan is a genius, his writing extraordinary. This one deserves a second Booker and maybe even the Nobel.
