MAYFLIES: Andrew O'Hagan
MAYFLIES
by Andrew O'Hagan
This is one of the best books on male friendship I've ever read. It's a glorious ode to loyalty, to mateship and to living and dying on your own terms. It also features a soundtrack that you can almost hear. As James and Tully obsess over Factory Records and the ‘Manchester Sound’ in 1980s Glasgow, you’ll be reaching to dust off some New Order records. O’Hagan hits a perfectly bittersweet note, conveying the nostalgia of old friends and youthful exploits as viewed from (almost) respectable middle age, without straying into over-sentimentality.
