WOMEN & CHILDREN: Tony Birch
WOMEN & CHILDREN
by Tony Birch
Winner of The Age Book of the Year 2024
Tony Birch writes the way Jack Johnson sings: stripped down, deceptively simplistic. Told by turns through the voice of young Joe Cluny and his grandpa Char, the harrowing violence perpetrated on his aunt Oona ripples through the whole family. I am not sure how such a serious subject can be told alongside such a rich vein of humour, charm and platonic friendship but Birch pulls it off to deliver a great read from one of our country’s finest.
